Book Review: The Seeker, by Ann H. Gabhart

Seeker, The: A Novel
She joined the Shakers to escape her troubles …

But unforeseen consequences threaten all she holds dear

Living just thirty miles from a restored Shaker village in Kentucky, Ann H. Gabhart has walked the same paths that her characters might have walked in generations past. Her thorough research provides a convincing and colorful backdrop for her Shaker novels. Gabhart is the author of several novels, including The Outsider and The Believer.  (Taken from www.RevellBooks.com)

The Seeker, by Ann Gabhart, author of The Outsider is a novel full of adventure!  Charlotte Vance, is a spunky, beautiful girl and knows what she wants, the question is, will she get it?  It is the 1860's, the North and South are about the break out in war and Charlotte wants nothing more than to marry her lifelong friend but he up and joins the Shakers.  This alone would send a young woman in love to despair, but add a father who up and marries a woman not much older than Charlotte herself who wants nothing more than money and prestige.  As war comes closer to home Charlotte has her father make good on a promise and Charlotte flees her home hoping to live in the Shaker community and find a way to change her intended's mind.  While living with the Shakers, thoughts of a handsome painter steal frequently into Charlotte's mind.

This book is full of twists and turns, love, forbidden love, slavery, escape, death, danger and hope.  I loved the characters, they came alive in the story making you love some, others, not so much.  I would recommend this book, it is not a serious or heavy read, but a very enjoyable novel.

“Available July 2010 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group.”
