Book Review: Zan-Gah

Zan-Gah: A Prehistoric AdventureZan-Gah and the Beautiful Country

WINNER: MOM'S CHOICE GOLD AWARD FOR YOUNG ADULT SERIES, 2010

WINNER: 2008 ERIC HOFFER BOOK AWARD, NOTABLE

FINALIST, ForeWord Magazine BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD, 2007

ZAN-GAH author Allan Richard Shickman conceived Zan's adventure after thousands of miles of travel through mountains, deserts and forest land.  The idea for this exciting story was born in a cave deep beneath the earth— in the company of hundreds of bats.

Allan is an artist, teacher, actor, author, historian, gardener, and former Boy Scout.  He has published articles in The Art Bulletin, Art History, English Literary Renaissance, Studies in English Literature: 1500-1900, Notes and Queries, and Colby Quarterly.  He was also Art and Music Bibliographer for Shakespeare Quarterly.  He has had many letters in various newspapers, including a dozen in The New York Times.  Allan taught the history of art at the University of Northern Iowa for three decades.  He now lives and writes in St. Louis.

I always had a difficult time finding books that my son was interested in reading. He was never really into the series books that are so popular, and was much more interested in true stories or at least stories that could be real to life, adventures, hunting, fishing, etc.

I was excited when I was contacted to review Allan Richard Shickman's Prehistoric Adventure books: Zan-Gah and Zan-Gah the Beautiful Country, HERE is the first chapter of Zan-Gah!

Now, these books are meant to be for young adults, tweens, but I can say that I truly enjoyed reading them.  They are full of adventure as you go on a journey with Zan-Gah in the first book to find his twin brother that has missing for years.  In Zan-Gah there is plenty of action and suspense and the short chapters make it a very easy read.  The story of Zan-Gah continues on in the second book, Zan-Gah and the Beautiful Country with no less action than the first.  Zan-Gah's brother has been found and has become come a disturbing character as the tribe moves to a new location the story is once again filled with adventure.  The second book can definitely stand on it's own, but makes a much more fun read when you have them both!

I highly recommend these books, they are great for home school as well as traditional school students, and while the main characters are young men, there is no reason that a girl will not enjoy reading these books every bit as much as a boy!  I'm thinking about purchasing a few extra copies for gifts!

  1. Thank you for your enthusiastic review. The Zan-Gah books make good presents for kids, upon confirmation for example. They won the Mom's Choice Gold Seal for excellence in family-friendly books. Also an Eric Hoffer award. I'm proud of these awards and the books that won them. The third novel of the Zan-Gah book series, Dael and the Painted People, is nearly finished. Watch for this book for young adults this summer at the new web address:
